I sat alone in the quietness of my empty home, struggling to fight back the tears threatening to spill down my cheeks. It was a battle I fought far too often these days. I was weary, hopeless. I was tired of praying. Convinced God was ignoring me. Certain that I wasn’t good enough to be listened to. I was ready to give up. God wasn’t answering my prayer and there wasn’t anything I could do about it, or at least that is what I thought.
For years I have prayed the same prayer. A plea to God to make a reality the dream that has been on my heart for some time. This desire I have is so strong that I can only think that it comes from God. This makes it even more disheartening that my prayer continues, unanswered.
I want to give up, sometimes, for a split second it crosses my mind. Throw my hands up, “alright, God, I’m done! I don’t have it in me anymore. This trust thing. This patience and hope thing. Well, it’s too much for me and I am really not cut out for it. So, I’m done.”
A split second.
That’s as long as that feeling lasts but it’s the longest, darkest, saddest, most full of despair split second ever.
Walk away from God? How can I do that? How can I walk away from the one who endured pain, abandonment, humiliation beyond my understanding? How can I walk away from the one who gave up his life for me?
No, I can’t walk away from God.
What can you do when God doesn’t answer your prayer? What can I do when I am barely hanging on, grasping for the smallest amount of truth to pull me out of the pit?
Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. Jeremiah 17:7-8
God is for you. Depend on him. The world will fail you. People will fail you. You will fail you. God is sufficient. He equips you with what you need to withstand hardships and overcome struggles. Hope and security come from him alone.
Rest in His Plan
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
He knows the plans he has for you and they may not be the same plans you have for you. God does not set out to harm us. Jesus did not suffer death on the cross so he can condemn and punish. For those who love him and are obedient to him, he has promised them riches beyond comprehension. Whether or not your time in this place turns out the way you want it to is not important, the eternal promise of his love is waiting for you.
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him. 1 John 5:14-15
This doesn’t mean God is going to give you whatever you ask of him. God hears your petitions, he is aware of them. We become caught up in immediate needs, God’s focus is on eternity. If your prayer is part of God’s eternal plan for you, trust that it will be answered.
Maybe you have a prayer that has gone unanswered. Don’t give up on God. He is working in ways we will never understand. He doesn’t ignore us. He remembers us. He doesn’t set us up for failure. He has plans to prosper us. He doesn’t think us unworthy. He loves us and has far greater treasures stored up for us than we could ever imagine.
Do you have a prayer waiting for an answer? Let us know. You don’t have to tell us what your prayer is but let us know that you are waiting and we can pray with you.
