The weekday mornings used to be a whirlwind, a crazy, loud, stressful, angry whirlwind. Me fighting with kids, kids fighting with each other. Things and people being left behind as we headed out the door. I was often exhausted before we even reached the first drop off spot and I still had rush hour traffic and a whole day’s work waiting for me. The short time our family had together in the morning needed to be better spent. We needed to begin our day with peace and calm. I knew it was time for some changes. Simple changes that made a big difference. These are the 5 things I do every morning to keep me from completely losing my mind.
We are a family of five, both my husband and I work full time outside the home. We have a two year old in daycare, a six year old in 1st grade and a 15 year old in 9th grade. My husband leaves for work, actually the gym then work, at 5:30am, while the kids are still sleeping and not asking for anything. The morning scramble, I mean routine, is left to me.
I start waking kids up at 6:40am, we have to be out the door by 7:20am if everyone is going to get to where they need to be on time. 1st graders and 9th graders get marked tardy if they are late, who would’ve thought. We have 40 minutes to get dressed, teeth brushed, school stuff together, breakfast in the bellies and in the van. The potential for derailment at every turn is present! I could wake the kids up a little earlier but I have learned the longer they are up the more distractions we tend to have.
I started to notice where the feeling of “we are moving along just fine” during our morning routine started to turn into “JUST GET YOUR STUFF DONE SO WE CAN LEAVE!” and I made some adjustments accordingly.
Now, we are (most of the time) out the door ON TIME with smiles on our faces and book bags in hand.
40 minutes, we’ve got this!
5 Things I Do Every Morning to Keep Me From Completely Losing My Mind
- COFFEE AND QUIET TIME
Seriously, I need this time to myself every morning. Once my husband is out the door I am on the couch with a cup of coffee and my bible. Even if it only lasts 20 minutes, this time allows me to focus and ground myself in truths and promises that carry me through the day.
- SHOWER BEFORE THE KIDS WAKE UP
I have to shower everyday. Even when the kids were newborns, itty bitty, I had to shower everyday. I shower as soon as quiet time is done, sometimes before if I am feeling particularly awake. It’s so much easier getting kids ready in the morning when I don’t have the task of getting myself ready looming over my head. I feel so much more together once I am showered and dressed, it’s a motivator.
- GET BREAKFAST READY
I have breakfast for the two little kids on the table and ready to go before I get them up. Our oldest makes himself breakfast. I like for the kids to have a direction once they wake up, they know to head straight to the breakfast table.
- START A LOAD OF LAUNDRY
While us getting out of the house on time is not impacted directly by a load of laundry, having clean clothes and avoiding the 9:00pm I have nothing clean to wear to school in the morning emergencies is. There are five of us and dirty clothes accumulate quickly. I start a load of laundry in the morning and finish it in the afternoon/evening. This routines keeps our laundry piles manageable. I don’t want to do 10 loads of laundry every Saturday.
My job is to make sure my kids are fed, clothed, where they need to be on time and ready for their day. My kids have to be responsible for what they are realistically capable of doing. They are learning to stay on track and get things done. It’s a challenge but it’s necessary.
There you have it. The 5 things I do every morning to keep me from completely losing my mind. They are simple tasks that for some reason have made a huge difference in how we handle our mornings.
A lot of our daily prep happens the night before. Homework review, lunches, wardrobe selections all usually happen at night and that makes life so much easier.
